Which VPN should you choose?

Choose Surfshark when your household needs more than ten active VPN connections or its Mac and iPhone website-bypass options meet a specific requirement. Consider NordVPN when ten connections are enough and its documented app controls or a larger bundle’s password manager and storage fit your needs.

The price comparison above uses NordVPN Basic and Surfshark Starter. It does not price the larger bundles. Both introductory examples cover 27 months, so you can compare the quoted payment over the same initial period; the renewal then buys a shorter, annual term.

This is a research-based comparison checked on 16 October 2026. We assessed published features and regional offer captures, then calculated the budget examples ourselves. We have not performed original network tests or verified a particular streaming library. A household’s device count can settle the choice

Count the connections you expect to keep active at the same time. A person with a phone, laptop and television has a different requirement from a household with several computers, phones and media boxes. An installation sitting unused is not an active connection.

NordVPN documents ten simultaneous connections. A compatible router configured as a VPN client uses one slot, covering devices routed through it. That is an alternative installation route, not evidence that every connected phone gains the native app’s controls. Check the router’s VPN-client compatibility before making it the basis of your purchase.

Surfshark documents unlimited VPN connections, including household sharing, across Starter, One and One+. It also warns about misuse such as unauthorized resale. Antivirus has a separate installation allowance. Unlimited VPN connections do not mean unlimited broadband capacity or identical features on every device.

For a household with eleven devices that genuinely need simultaneous coverage, Surfshark removes the ordinary ten-connection constraint. With five active devices, that benefit alone does not decide the purchase: app compatibility, the required controls and the full subscription budget become more useful criteria.

Split tunneling: compare the control on your actual device

Split tunneling can send selected traffic outside the VPN. Some apps also let you reverse the default so only the selected traffic uses the tunnel. Those are materially different configurations, even when both appear under one feature name.

The practical distinction on iPhone is particularly easy to miss. Surfshark can bypass a website, but that does not establish that a separate banking, calling or media app can be excluded. If whole-app exclusion is essential, verify another solution rather than treating “iOS split tunneling” as sufficient.

NordVPN’s Linux allowlist also needs care: matching ports or subnets bypass the tunnel and its kill-switch protection in both directions. A broad network rule is not equivalent to selecting one application. For either provider, check the intended route after reconnecting and keep exceptions limited to your actual requirement.

Basic vs Starter, then the larger bundles

Compare the core VPN subscription first. A longer feature list is useful only when the included tools suit your devices and replace something you would otherwise need.

NordVPN’s EUR catalogue viewed from Lithuania showed Basic, Complete and Ultra. Its US-facing catalogue showed Basic, Complete and Prime. Those regional names are not interchangeable. Read the plan table shown to you, particularly for country-restricted identity services and desktop-only tools.

Surfshark’s support matrix is the source for its included products. If you already pay for a password manager, cloud storage or antivirus, compare the actual replacement value before adding a second subscription for similar functions.

Introductory price and renewal answer different questions

The first payment tells you the cash commitment today. The monthly equivalent tells you how that payment spreads over its included term. Neither tells you what the next payment buys unless you also read the renewal period.

Our dated EUR examples show NordVPN Basic at €94.23 for 27 months, with a quoted €139.08 annual renewal; its page says VAT may apply. Surfshark Starter is €67.23 for 27 months, with a quoted €70.45 annual renewal, before VAT. We applied no currency conversion. These are regional examples and may differ from your own checkout.

The initial quoted payment difference is €27.00. If both subscriptions renew once at those quoted amounts, the plan payments total €233.31 for NordVPN and €137.68 for Surfshark over 39 months. That is a €95.63 difference in quoted plan payments, before any additional tax, extras or later price changes. The budget selector makes this change in time horizon visible.

This does not mean either provider sells a single 39-month package at that amount. It combines two billing events. A renewal may be charged before the current term expires, and the later renewal price can change. Keep the checkout’s actual currency, total, selected products, term and next billing date.

The cheap VPN guide adds PIA and a flat monthly reference from Mullvad. It is useful when your real alternative is a shorter commitment rather than another multi-year introductory offer.

Cancellation and refunds: keep the seller on your receipt

Both providers describe a 30-day guarantee for eligible first purchases. It is an initial payment followed by a refund request under conditions, not the same as a month of free access. Turning off automatic renewal is also a separate action from requesting a refund.

Read NordVPN’s refund policy and Surfshark’s refund policy for the applicable purchase channel. Ordinary renewals are outside the stated first-purchase guarantee, subject to applicable rights and exceptions. Surfshark also lists repeat-refund and specified non-refundable service/add-on exclusions.

A receipt identifies the seller and purchase date. Keep it with the renewal terms and contact support before relying on an exception. Do not assume a website purchase and an app-store purchase follow identical rules.

Shared ownership and specialist features need separate checks

Surfshark’s February 2022 announcement describes joining Nord Security’s corporate group while keeping separate operations and infrastructure. That is the company’s announcement, not an independent inspection of present-day infrastructure. Choosing both brands should not be treated as choosing unrelated corporate groups, and the announcement does not entitle one ordinary subscription to both products.

For an application that requires incoming port forwarding, avoid treating a standard VPN, a dedicated IP and a dedicated server as equivalent. NordVPN’s current Dedicated Server instructions put port forwarding in a separate Dedicated Server add-on; they exclude standard servers and the Dedicated IP product. They also identify a macOS App Store limitation. That add-on is outside the Basic-versus-Starter budget above.

A requirement such as this deserves its own product and platform check. A generic “works for gaming” or “supports torrents” label does not establish that the specific incoming-network feature you need is included.

Evaluate the service on your own network

Published specifications cannot establish which service will behave better on your connection. Your device, app version, selected protocol, server, local Wi-Fi and destination service can all affect the experience. We do not turn another reviewer’s results into our own performance claim.

For a useful evaluation, record the starting setup, then check ordinary tasks while changing one thing at a time:

• Connect on the device you actually use, recording the app version, protocol and server.
• Try your normal browsing, a video call and any local printer or media library you need.
• Check what happens after sleep, reconnecting and switching networks.
• Verify both included and excluded applications after changing a routing rule.
• Keep billing and refund dates visible while you evaluate the service.

For Kodi, start with the device-specific installation guide. For a phone, use the Android checks. A browser extension is not a substitute for covering a standalone app, and a VPN cannot guarantee access to a particular streaming catalogue.
