ExpressVPN Review: plans, router choices, and caveats

Our view

ExpressVPN is worth considering when a supported router setup is central to your plan. Its documentation covers several router routes, but the age and update status of the hardware and software matter. Do not buy a router on the strength of a years-old tutorial.

We have not conducted original speed, leak, or Netflix tests. This review explains the current published plan and setup choices.

Device limits now depend on the tier

ExpressVPN’s connection guide lists ten simultaneous devices for Basic, twelve for Advanced, and fourteen for Express Pro. An older review quoting a single brand-wide allowance can therefore be misleading. Check the exact plan at checkout and compare only the features included in it.

If you need many personal device connections and do not want to calculate a cap, also consider Surfshark or PIA. If a small monthly commitment matters more, compare Mullvad.

Router support needs a current check

ExpressVPN’s current router FAQ distinguishes Fortify from GL.iNet, existing Aircove products, supported third-party router firmware, and compatible manual OpenVPN configurations. These are different arrangements with different support implications.

The provider says Aircove routers are no longer available for purchase. It also says the older ExpressVPN app for supported third-party routers no longer receives security updates. Those facts matter more than an old “best VPN router” badge. Before buying hardware or installing firmware, read the current router FAQ and the update policy for the exact model.

A router supporting VPN pass-through is not the same as a router that can act as a VPN client. Confirm the actual capability rather than relying on the word “VPN” in a specification sheet.

What Lightway tells you

ExpressVPN offers its Lightway protocol. A protocol choice describes part of the connection design; it does not prove a speed result on your ISP. Test the available app and network route on the device you use, and follow current support advice if one connection method fails.

For a phone or computer, a native app may be simpler than adding router hardware. A household with a few supported devices might not need a network-wide installation at all.

Free access, trials, and refunds

ExpressVPN does not have a permanent free tier comparable to Proton VPN Free. Any trial or refund offer should be checked for platform, purchase channel, eligibility, and automatic renewal. A refund guarantee normally means paying first.

The buying decision

Record the selected tier, amount due now, term, and renewal. Do not assume a plan shown in another region has the same total cost or extras. Evaluate the app or supported hardware during any applicable evaluation period and keep a copy of the terms.
