Is Private Internet Access worth buying?
Private Internet Access is a useful choice for a household that needs unlimited personal connections and configurable desktop routing. Check your main device first: its desktop routing controls, Android app exclusions and iPhone features differ.
This review evaluates published documentation and a dated checkout quote. We have not run original speed, leak, streaming or torrent-throughput tests, so there is no performance score.
Who PIA suits
PIA’s unlimited simultaneous connections can help when several people use computers, phones and televisions. Its terms limit the service to permitted personal use and allow action against abuse, including resale. Your broadband and device capacity still determine how well several active connections work.
The stronger reason to shortlist it is control: on supported desktop apps, you can decide which applications use the VPN and which connect directly. If you only need occasional browsing on one device, Proton VPN Free may be enough. If you want a short commitment, compare Mullvad’s monthly pricing.
PIA features by platform
These are documented options checked on 16 October 2026. App availability does not mean that every platform has every feature.
Scroll the table to see every column.
| Your device | Published app requirement | Routing detail to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or 11; 64-bit and ARM64 support listed | Desktop app and IP-address split tunneling |
| Mac | Direct download: macOS 10.15+; Mac App Store: macOS 12+ | Split tunneling requires the relevant system extension permission |
| Linux desktop | Supported 64-bit distributions; check your distribution and version | Desktop routing rules and DNS behavior |
| Android phone | Android 7+ | Per App Settings excludes applications; it does not exclude individual websites |
| iPhone or iPad | iOS 15+ | No split tunneling in PIA’s current iOS documentation |
| Fire TV | Fire OS 6+ in PIA’s compatibility list | Confirm the exact device and app-store availability |
PIA’s current compatibility list is the source for these requirements. A listed minimum is not a reason to keep an obsolete operating system in use. For a media box, follow our device-first Kodi guide; for a phone, use the Android VPN checklist.
Split tunneling: choose the default route first
On Windows, macOS and Linux, PIA’s desktop guide separates two application rules: Bypass VPN sends the selected app directly, while Only VPN restricts that app to the VPN connection. IP-address or subnet exceptions are bypass rules, not a way to force a destination into the tunnel.
The easy setting to overlook is All Other Apps. Its default can route unlisted apps through the VPN or send them directly. Inspect that setting before adding exceptions; otherwise a rule for one browser can leave the rest of the computer on a route you did not intend.
Windows and Linux also have a DNS choice: requests can follow the application rules or use PIA’s configured resolver throughout. Treat routing and DNS as separate checks. After changing a rule, test both an included and an excluded application, then repeat after reconnecting.
Android uses application exclusions instead of the full desktop rule system. PIA’s support guide says iOS has no split tunneling. An excluded app’s traffic uses the ordinary connection; the exclusion removes VPN coverage for that traffic.
WireGuard apps and router limits
PIA documents WireGuard in its desktop, mobile, Android TV and Fire TV apps. That protocol option does not establish a speed advantage on your connection.
The router case is different. PIA’s WireGuard guide says it does not support manual WireGuard configuration on routers and directs router users to manual OpenVPN setup. Do not buy a router solely because its specifications mention WireGuard. Verify the provider configuration and the router’s VPN-client capability together.
If you need advanced incoming-port handling for a particular application, check the current platform and server documentation separately. Protocol support alone does not establish that every advanced feature is available.
Privacy claims and account information
PIA’s privacy policy says it does not retain browsing history, user IP addresses or connection timestamps. It also lists information used for the account and payment process, including an email address, payment-related data and applicable tax-location details. A no-logs claim does not mean the subscription creates no account information.
The policy identifies PIA Private Internet Access, Inc. as the data controller and refers to Kape Technologies. Read the full privacy policy if company structure or data handling affects your decision. This review does not independently verify the provider’s infrastructure, audit scope or operation of its logging policy.
Upfront cost, renewal and refunds
Our 16 October 2026 EUR checkout snapshot showed €51.74 before tax for 26 months, followed by €51.74 plus applicable tax every 12 months. The same payment therefore covers a shorter period at renewal. It is a dated example, not a guaranteed offer in your country. The cheap-VPN comparison records the monthly equivalents, tax basis and other options.
Before paying, save the actual currency, total, included months, renewal period and optional extras shown in your checkout. PIA’s terms describe automatic renewal unless it is cancelled; turning off renewal and requesting money back are separate actions.
The refund guide updated on 5 October 2026 describes a 30-day guarantee for subscriptions purchased on PIA’s website. Apple App Store and Google Play purchases use the respective store’s refund process. Gift cards and third-party deal-site purchases are non-refundable under that guide. It also sets conditions for repeat refunds and verification requests. Read the applicable policy before treating an initial payment as recoverable.
A checklist for your own evaluation
- Record the starting point: device, operating system, app version, selected protocol and server.
- Check ordinary tasks: browsing, calls, local printers and any local media library you use.
- Review exceptions: identify which apps should use the tunnel and which should connect directly.
- Reconnect deliberately: check the behavior after sleep, a reboot and a network change.
- Keep failures specific: note the error, app and time; change one setting at a time before contacting support.
- Check billing separately: keep the receipt, renewal date and the seller responsible for cancellation or refunds.
These are checks to perform on your own setup, not results from our lab. A consumer VPN subscription also does not replace an employer’s approved connection to its private network.
Which alternative fits your needs?
Surfshark is another option for many personal devices. NordVPN gives you a documented ten-connection allowance. Proton VPN has a free plan to assess separately from its paid features, while Mullvad offers a flat monthly reference.
Use the PIA and Surfshark comparison to check the published connection allowance and core differences. Prefer the service whose current app supports your actual requirements, then assess it on your own network.
Common questions
Does PIA have unlimited connections?
PIA advertises unlimited simultaneous connections for personal use. That does not mean unlimited network capacity or permission to resell access; its service terms apply.
Does PIA split tunneling work on iPhone?
PIA’s current support documentation says split tunneling is not available on iOS. Desktop controls and Android app exclusions should not be treated as iPhone features.
Does PIA support WireGuard on a router?
PIA’s current WireGuard guide says manual WireGuard configuration on routers is not supported and directs router users to manual OpenVPN setup. Check the exact router before subscribing.
